What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the number one cause of irreversible blindness worldwide affecting an estimated 70 million people.

Glaucoma is a term that refers to a number of conditions that cause cell death in the optic nerve, resulting in irreparable and permanent loss of vision. Known as the 'silent' or 'sneak' thief of sight, it is particularly dangerous since in most cases there are few if any symptoms until a significant proportion of eyesight has already been lost.

This is because very commonly it affects peripheral vision first, i.e. from the outside inwards, so that the early the effects are not noticeable and because when central vision is unaffected, sufferers still believe that they have good eyesight.

By the time you notice any symptoms you may have already lost up to 70% of your vision. It affects approximately 1% of the population, especially as you get older, although it can affect anyone at any age. Are you at risk? If anyone in your family has had glaucoma, or you are over 40, you have ever had an eye injury or surgery, or you are a woman, or you come from certain ethnic groups, you may be at risk.
